The course of the race is now well established as it makes its way from Beadnell to Alnmouth using public footpaths and roadways. The course which most competitors choose to run is approximately 14 miles long (depending on whether the tide is in or out).

A HUGE congratulations are due to Jennie Harrison who completed her first Ironman in Austria last weekend in 16.33.23 hours ( For those of you who do not know an Ironman consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run ( a marathon) to finish). And it’s a race with a cut off time of 17 hours, so if you go over that you do not exist in terms of completing the ironman race, do not get a medal or tee shirt and do not figure on the race results.
But Jennies achievement was greater than just completing the Ironman in the qualifying time, she rode through a severe thunderstorm and was sent in the wrong direction by one of the marshals which resulted in her completing an extra 40 miles on top of the 112 and having a police escort back to the main race route. She tells me that between the tears she was swearing at the officials in the official car guiding her back. Yet she still crossed the line with a smile on her face in what was a fantastic achievement and shows what the human body and mind is capable off. So next time you see her remember you are in the presence of an ordinary person who achieved something extraordinary. Oh and by the way her hubby Gary came in around 11hour 17 minutes, but he’d done one before! Well done mate.
